Headaches can be extremely painful and at times debilitating. There are different points on the head that are affected and they involve the muscles, blood vessels and or nerves. There are two main categories of headaches namely primary and secondary. The category of primary headaches encompasses migraine, tensions and cluster headaches. On the other hand, the secondary class of headaches is caused by other illnesses, traumas and brain disorders. A secondary head pain is caused by nerve stimulation and irritation, pressure and or constriction. It should be noted that secondary headache is the symptom of another problem and not the primary problem.

Primary headaches mostly go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed as tension or sinus headaches. On the other hand, secondary headaches result from many different conditions and range from life threatening ones to less serious but common conditions. The life threatening headaches symptoms include brain tumors, strokes, meningitis and subarachnoid hemorrhages. In most cases, people suffer from mixed headache disorders where tension headaches or secondary headaches trigger migraines. Sinus headaches result in dull, deep and throbbing pain in the sinuses. This makes bending down or leaning forward as painful as it does during cold and damp weather. Sinus headaches begin when one gets up in the morning and may get better by afternoon. They can be difficult to diagnose nonetheless.

It is very important to look at what makes sinus headache symptoms and migraine symptoms different. It is possible for a doctor to prescribe antibiotics for a sinus headache and in severe cases the sinuses need to be drained. Antibiotics take long to work and if the headache is gone after a day, it is possible that it was a migraine. If one gets a cold or an allergic attack that does not seem to go away, this may be sinusitis. The sinus headache symptoms include post nasal drip, a cold and flu, chest congestion, fever, fatigue and thicker than normal and discolored mucus. Other sinus headache symptoms are a pressure-like pain on specific areas of the face or head, tender face to touch, worse pain in the morning and sudden temperature changes.

Treat the sinus infection as soon as the sinus headache symptoms have been noticed. If not treated immediately, it may spread to the brain and the membranes that cover it. Give as much information to the physician if you notice sinus headache symptoms. The most well known treatment for a sinus headache is aspirin, acetaminophen or ibuprofen. These temporarily relieve the pain. The doctor may make a prescription for a decongestant if the sinuses are blocked. Antibiotics may be prescribed if the patient has sinusitis. Additionally, antihistamines are recommended if allergies are the cause of sinusitis. Once the sinuses are cleared, a sinus headache should as well disappear though some patients may frequently and continually need additional treatments. It should be noted that the treatment of the headache depends on the type and severity of the headache and other factors like age of the patient.
